Emfuleni workers pocket R65m overtime but water crisis persists

The beleaguered municipality of Emfuleni in Gauteng has spent more than R65.5 million on overtime for its water utility workers despite losing more than half (around 56%) of its water to leaks at an annual cost of R500 million. This is despite residents bearing the brunt of raw sewage, rising water rates and declining water pressure due to the municipality’s failure to address reported water leaks and to pay his water bill of 1.1 billion rand.
