KKR vs LSG: “Rinku Singh is a pocket rocket”

Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri has applauded Rinku Singh, calling him a ‘pocket rocket’ after his 15 40s nearly helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) chase 211 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the IPL 2022 match on Wednesday.

Chasing the huge tally, Kolkata looked out of the challenge at 150 for six in the seventeenth as Andre Russell was excused for five. Regardless, Rinku beat two fours and four sixes to carry KKR extremely close to triumph. In a deplorable for the southpaw and the establishment, Kolkata lost by two points and were wiped out of IPL 2022.

Rinku Singh is a free-spirited cricketer: Ravi Shastri

Hailing 24-year-old Rinku for his willow fighting efforts, Shastri told ESPNcricinfo:

“Rinku Singh is a pocket rocket. How well he hit. He is a free-spirited cricketer. The way he grabs and grabs, he really has fun and gives it his all. At bat, we saw that he might be small but he hit the ball really hard.

Really enjoyed his stick. After Russell exited, it looked like KKR’s hopes were over, but Rinku’s 40 out of 15 balls brought them back into the game out of nowhere.

With Kolkata needing three of the last two balls, Rinku fell to a brilliant one-handed catch from Evin Lewis on the bowling of Marcus Stoinis. Umesh Yadav was thrown to the next ball as KKR missed the chase from very close range.

KKR showed a lot of character: Ravi Shastri

Despite the loss, Shastri paid tribute to Kolkata for showing character in the huge chase after losing their first games early. He said:

“KKR showed a lot of character after going 9-2 in a 211 chase. Shreyas Iyer started the fightback attacking and featured in a good partnership with Nitish Rana. This position gave them some momentum. They showed good character to cross 200. It was a positive for Kolkata.

The deplorable two-point loss meant Kolkata finished their IPL 2022 mission with 12 points (six wins, eight losses). They became the third team to be eliminated after Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
