Welsh gran nearly £1,000 out of pocket after Wizz Air took her to the wrong country

A Welsh pensioner only realized she had been taken to the wrong country when she landed and attempted to pass through passport control. The 89-year-old was traveling overseas for her son’s wedding.

Swansea’s Joe Winter checked into Luton Airport on April 9, delighted to be flying to Ljubljana, Slovenia, for the wedding of his grandson Aaron. But instead, Wizz Air left her 680 miles from her destination in Poznań, Poland.

Joe, who is in a wheelchair, and his daughter Hayley Vickery, 58, were shown to the Wizz Air plane after showing staff their boarding passes and chatting with staff in the Slovenian capital.

However, once they landed and proceeded to passport control, a guard told them they were in Poznań, Poland, 680 miles from their intended destination.

The other half of their group, who were on the correct plane, learned mid-flight that Joe and Hayley were not seated in the designated handicap access area. Hayley didn’t have a phone charger or medicine for her mother, so she had to spend hundreds of pounds to get them to Slovenia in time for the wedding two days later.

Once back in Wales, Hayley told the Mirror: “It was all stress. We were away for a week in total and Wizz Air has still not been in touch.

“My mother was terrible. She didn’t have her medication and was deprived of it from Saturday to Tuesday. Everyone was beside themselves.”

Explaining how it all happened, Hayley explained that after arriving at the airport, the couple were separated from their group and taken to gate 20. Everything was fine until they land.

She said: “We showed our passports at the door and they asked if we had ever been to Poland,” Hayley explained.

“I said ‘yes why?’ It’s because we were in Poznań.”

For three and a half hours, the desperate duo sat at the airport trying to figure out what to do, with no offer of help or refreshment from staff members.

Eventually, after numerous attempts to call Wizz Air’s premium rate phone number, they were told to book a hotel in Poland or return to Luton – the latter option meaning they would likely miss Aaron’s wedding.

Instead, they decided to spend the night in Poznań before hopping in a £270 taxi to Warsaw, where they caught a flight to Ljubljana that had cost them almost £700.

There they found their luggage, including wedding outfits, which had been removed from the Wizz Air flight to Luton.

Hayley said: “We have had no contact with Wizz Air.

“In a very unstable Europe, we were put on a plane to Poland and nobody knew where we were. We were close to the border with Ukraine.

“I would like Wizz Air to apologize and explain what happened, and a full refund.”

The Mirror has contacted Wizz Air for comment.
